Sock School is a workshop, presented in a series of 3 weekly classes, that guides participants through at least one tried and true method to make each structural essential for The Sock. There is an option to take topics individually, or as a 3-workshop series that will cover all sock knitting essentials. Please note there may be different preparation requirements for individual sessions if not attending all three in a series.

Level: Novice+ to Intermediate
Participants are expected to be able to knit, purl, increase, decrease, and cast on/bind
off a piece of knitting. Knitting in-the-round experience is helpful, but not mandatory. For
the newer knitter, it is strongly recommended that you attend the entire series and aim
to work on the mini/practice size sock, as that should be achievable during class time or
with minimal knitting time in between. You will still learn all the essentials but can be
more relaxed about your progress during this possibly intense couple of weeks.

Part 1: Sock Starters

Sunday, January 11, 10:00 - noon

Knitters will learn and practice tried-and-true ways to cast on and get knitting, whether you start from the cuff or from the toe. Essential for the new-to-socks knitter, this also includes options and challenges for those who want to try something new in their current sock routine.

Includes consultation and shopping assistance for those who need tools and materials advice.

Part 2: The Bendy Bit - Turning Heels

Sunday, January 18, 10:00 - noon

The defining feature of "sock" is the fitting of a heel, otherwise you've got a sleeve on your foot. The middle workshop in the series covers design, demonstration, and practice of a few (among dozens) of the ways knitters can work their way around that corner.

Materials/Preparation (required!): If continuing from the Sock Starters session, please bring the results, mini or full-sized, from that session. If attending this workshop on its own, please bring one or more of:

a sock foot with gusset expansion completed,
a sock leg knit from the cuff to an appropriate leg length,
at least two short lengths of knit tubing, one of which is approx. 1.5x the diameter of the other.
Darning needle and waste yarn/stitch holders along with your preferred tools and yarn

Part 3: Finishing and Finesse!

Sunday, January 25, 10:00 - noon

Team Tops-Down: we will work through different ways to work your decreases and neatly complete a hard-wearing toe.
Team Toes-First: let's try some tidy cuff options and a comfy, stretchy bind-off

For the “final” installment, knitters will have the opportunity to troubleshoot and catch up, finishing a first sock. Covers:  What's next? Q&A, tips-and-tricks, troubleshooting your workshop sock, and planning your next sock (or ten). We'll do our best to not lose anyone to Single Sock Syndrome.

Materials/Preparation (required!): If continuing from one of the earlier sessions in the series, please bring your sock(s)-in-progress. If attending this workshop on its own, please bring one or more of:

a sock with the heel worked, whether toe-up or top-down, OR
1 or 2 short lengths of knit tubing with end stitches picked up onto needles
Darning needle and waste yarn/stitch holders along with your preferred tools and yarn

Materials List(s):

Sock yarn – 40 g (sample sock)/100 g (pair of adult med socks)
Needles as knitter prefers
Recommended: darning needle, stitch markers, waste yarn or string

For new knitters, materials may be purchased at Flying Squirrel after consultation in the first workshop.

Please let us know if you have any questions about materials and we will be happy to assist!
